What's happening in York Region on Canada Day

Here's a list of what’s open and what’s not, along with changes in public services, for Canada Day.

Services, food and drink:

  • The LCBO, The Beer Store, government offices and banks will be closed on July 1. Canada Post will not collect or deliver mail.
  • Not all grocery stores will close for the holiday, but it’s better to check with your local store before leaving your pantry bare.

Transit:

  • York Region Transit, Viva and TTC routes in the region will be operating on a Sunday holiday schedule and the contact centre will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • GO Transit will be operating on a Saturday schedule for the holiday.

Aurora:

  • Waste collection for July 1 will be moved to July 2 due to the holiday.
  • The Aurora Public Library, Aurora Seniors’ Centre and Aurora Cultural Centre are closed.
  • The Aurora Family Leisure Complex is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., with a free leisure swim from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and a free public skate from 1 to 3:15 p.m.
  • The Stronach Aurora Recreation Complex is closed.

East Gwillimbury:

  • Waste collection scheduled for Friday will shift to Saturday.
  • Sharon Temple and Mount Albert Lions Community Centre will be open for celebrations.
  • Both branches of the East Gwillimbury Public Library will be closed.

Georgina:

  • The Georgina Civic Centre, gym, leisure pool, public libraries, Stephen Leacock Theatre, Pioneer Village, Sutton Arena, Ice Palace, animal shelter and The Link will be closed.
  • The ROC will be open for celebrations from 2 to 10 p.m. and fireworks.

King:

  • Waste collection will shift from Friday to Saturday.
  • Municipal offices and the parks and recreation facilities will be closed.
  • The Nobleton outdoor pool will be open for public swimming from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 1:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Markham:

  • Waste collection will be shifted from Friday to Saturday.
  • Markville Mall will be open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Town offices and facilities, as well as all branches of the public library, are closed.

Newmarket:

  • Waste collection regularly scheduled for July 1 will be shifted to July 2.
  • Upper Canada Mall will be open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • The Elman W. Campbell Museum will host an open house from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • The Newmarket Public Library will be closed.

Richmond Hill:

  • Waste collection will be shifted from Friday to Saturday pick up.
  • Hillcrest Mall will be open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • All branches of the public library and community centres, fitness studios, pools and arenas are closed.
  • Richmond Green and Tom Graham Arena will be open for celebrations and the wave pool will be open for adult leisure swim from 6:30 to 8:30 a.m., leisure swim from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and wave swim from 1:30 to 4 p.m.

Vaughan:

  • Waste collection scheduled for Friday will move to Saturday.
  • All Vaughan municipal offices, programs, animal services and public libraries are closed.
  • The Thornhill outdoor poll, located at 28 Centre St., will be open for parent and tot swim from 10 a.m. to noon and for public swimming from 12:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Whitchurch-Stouffville:

  • Waste collection will be shifted from Friday to Saturday morning.
  • The municipal offices, public library, museum, 19 on the Park, Stouffville Arena, Clippers Complex and Soccer City are all closed.
  • The Whitchurch-Stouffville Leisure Centre pool is open from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., but the fitness centre will be closed.

1. RICHMOND HILL'S CANADA DAY CELEBRATIONS feature a fireworks display, live entertainment, food, a beer garden, children’s village, teen zone, a marketplace and so much more.

2. The AURORA CANADA DAY PARADE goes along Yonge Street starting at 10 a.m. The parade will go from Mosley Street to Murray Drive.

3. For the TOWN OF AURORA CANADA DAY CELEBRATIONS, bring the entire family to Lambert Willson Park in Aurora for music, food, games, crafts and live entertainment all day. Classic Car show too. Fireworks at dusk.

4. Head to Newmarket’s annual KANATA SUMMER FESTIVAL that begins with a pancake breakfast, ends with a fireworks display and nothing but family fun in between.

5. Rock out at VAUGHAN'S CANADA DAY PARTY with Canadian pop singer Shawn Desman, local musicians and children’s entertainment  at Mackenzie Glen District Park.

6. Over in Markham, the UNIONVILLE CANADA DAY CELEBRATIONS have food, entertainment and plenty of twinkly lights as the fireworks are displayed.

7. Join the CANADA DAY PARTY AT THE ROC IN GEORGINA for a full day of fun activities followed by fireworks. It's also the first day of the GEORGINA RIBFEST.

8. In East Gwillimbury, celebrate Canada’s birthday at the COMMUNITY CANADA DAY event at the Sharon Temple in East Gwillimbury with fun for the entire family.

9. That evening, there's a CANADA DAY CONCERT AND FIREWORKS at the Mount Albert Lions Community Centre.

10. Over in King Township, CANADA DAY IN KETTLEBY gets going with food at 6:30 p.m. and fireworks at 9:45 p.m. Tyrwhitt Park.

11. Gaze in awe at the over 6,000 colourful explosions take place over Wonder Mountain at Canada’s Wonderland during a CANADA DAY FIREWORKS DISPLAY Friday evening. The fireworks are part of a larger CANADA DAY WEEKEND CELEBRATION at the amusement park.

12. Take a ride on THE PRIDE OF CAROUSEL, music, food and activities in Markham. Food trucks galore!

13. Day two of the four-day WHITCHURCH-STOUFFVILLE STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL features a number Canada Day activities including a Canada Day cake and fireworks in Memorial Park. That's also the day of the Strawberry Pie and Jam contest -- just sayin'.

14. The Elman Campbell Museum in Newmarket is hosting a CANADA DAY OPEN HOUSE from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Free admission.

15. CANADA DAY IN KLEINBURG VILLAGE from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. features buskers, BBQ, live music and a Kids Zone.
